How to Leave the US in 2026: The Complete Guide
You're not the only one running the numbers. 5.5 million Americans already live abroad. 1 in 3 Americans seriously considered moving abroad in 2025. US net migration went negative in 2025 for the first time since 1935. This guide is the 12-page version of that decision, built around the questions people actually ask, with the math.

2 · The hard part isn't the visa, it's the move
Pulling the trigger is the hard part. The visa paperwork, once you've chosen a pathway, is mechanical. The hard parts:
- Healthcare gap. Medicare doesn't cover you abroad. Need international health insurance ($3,000-9,000+/yr, and into five figures for older retirees) or qualifying residency for local public healthcare.
- Banking transition. US banks technically require US residency. Wise + Revolut + Schwab International + Interactive Brokers is the standard 4-account stack.
- Tax double-filing. US citizens file US taxes forever, plus local taxes if you become resident. Tax treaty prevents double-taxation but doesn't eliminate paperwork. Budget $300-500/yr for expat tax service.
- Kids' schooling. If you have kids, this is the single biggest practical decision. International schools commonly cost EUR 7,000 to 24,000 (about $8,000 to $26,000) a year per child; local public schools are free but language-of-instruction is the question. Plan 6+ months ahead.
- Pets. Some countries are easy (EU pet passport scheme). Others are brutal (Australia / NZ quarantine). One-third of r/AmerExit posts about logistics mention pets.
- Social fabric. r/expats highest-engagement question this year was: "Have you ever ended up HATING a place where you moved to?" The de-romanticized answer: yes, regularly. Integration takes 2-3 years minimum. Loneliness was the second-most-mentioned fear in our Reddit corpus (125 mentions).
3 · The four pathways in detail
Pathway A, Citizenship by Descent
The cheapest, most durable pathway. If you have a grandparent (or in some cases great-grandparent) born in Italy, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Hungary, France, or Mexico, you may already qualify for a second passport. Average cost: $500-12,000. Average timeline: 9 months to 7 years depending on country.

Pathway B, Retirement / Passive-Income Visas
If you have steady passive income (pension, dividends, rental income, Social Security), the EU and Mexico both offer retirement-visa pathways with low income thresholds. Portugal D7 at €920/mo is the cheapest EU threshold; Mexico Temporal from about $4,400/mo income (or ~$74k savings), Permanente from about $7,400/mo, is the best US-proximity option.

Pathway C, Skilled-Worker Visas
For mid-career professionals: Germany Blue Card, Netherlands DAFT / HSM, Australia 482, Canada Express Entry, Ireland Critical Skills, UK Global Talent. Most require a sponsoring employer or specific qualification thresholds. The Country Matcher flags a skilled-work route when your answers fit one.
Pathway D, Digital Nomad Visas
For Americans with remote US income: Portugal DNV, Spain DNV, Italy DNV, Greece DNV, Estonia DNV, plus newer programs in Albania, Croatia, Hungary, Turkey. Typical threshold: €2,500-3,500/mo active income. The Country Matcher flags a digital-nomad route when your income is remote.
